Online Unfinished Furniture Store

By: Thomas Bridleman

Whenever possible, I would recommend shopping for bare wood furniture at a brick and mortar shop vs. buying from an online unfinished furniture store. There are two primary reasons for this. First, because price is often at least one of the reasons for buying unfinished furniture (which is often in the neighborhood of 50% cheaper than its finished cousins) and you erode some portion of the price advantage if you have to pay shipping charges associated with buying from an online unfinished furniture store.

Second, and perhaps more compelling than the cost aspect is the fact that buying unfinished furniture is, by and large, a tactile experience. You get to walk through the showroom of a brick and mortar establishment. Reach out and touch the wood. Feel it beneath your hands. The sights and smells of a brick and mortar shop, combined with on-site expertise and the fact that you get to physically inspect the piece prior to purchase and select the one that’s just right for you…all that is lost if you shop via an online vendor.

Of course, not every area has a brick and mortar shop within a reasonable driving distance (where my wife and I live now, on the Carolina coast, we have none in driving distance, contrasted with when we lived in the suburbs of Atlanta, there were three close at hand!), and in that case, shopping with one of the online unfinished furniture stores might be your only option.

Whatever your reasons for looking for an online vendor of unfinished furniture, the three key elements you’ll want to keep in the forefront of your mind before deciding to give someone your business are these:

Price - This is perhaps an even bigger consideration when buying from an online vendor than it would be when buying from a brick and mortar shop, because you’ll likely have to factor in shipping costs to the total price of whatever you buy. In order to make sure you’re getting the best value for your money, both of these costs must be evaluated.

Selection - If you like bare wood furniture, you’ll probably want more than one piece, and there’s no reason to have to run all over the internet and set up scads of new accounts with several different online unfinished furniture stores. Just make sure you find one with a killer selection, and you’re all set.

Shipping & Return Policies - When choosing from among the various online unfinished furniture stores, pay special attention to this, and in general, award extra points to the store with the most favorable shipping costs. Odds are good that you’ll never have to use the company’s return policy, but any time you buy from one of the online vendors, there’s always a chance that the piece you buy could be damaged in transit to you, so as long as the online vendor has a return policy, you should be fine.

A quick “test” of the online unfinished furniture store you’ve selected would be to contact them and ask a question about one of their pieces, and note how long it takes them to reply to you. While not fool-proof, it’s a pretty reliable indicator of the overall level of customer service you can expect, should difficulties arise.

My first, best recommendation would be to use local brick and mortar establishments whenever possible, but using the outline above, you should have little difficulty in selecting from among the online unfinished furniture stores out there, should your circumstances dictate buying online.
